Welcome to the Department of Geography Shyama Prasad Mukherji College, University of Delhi. Geography is an important subject of Humanities that has both practical and theoretical value with application opportunities in diverse areas. It provides a bridge between the social sciences and the physical sciences through the provision of an understanding of the dynamics of cultures, societies, and economies on the one hand, and those of physical landscapes and environmental processes on the other. The Department of Geography was established in the year 1994-95 for B. A. Programme students. Geography (Hons) was introduced in the year 2018. Since its inception, the department has established a high standard of academic excellence.
Course Details:
Our department offers two undergraduate geography programs:
1.A Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in Geography
2.A Bachelor of Arts (Multidisciplinary) in Geography.
It also offers GE courses to the students of other departments of the college The curriculum focusses on physical, human, economic, socio cultural and environmental aspects. It incorporates a diverse array of subjects namely Geomorphology, Climatology, Regional Planning and Development, Urban & Social Geography, GIS & Remote Sensing, Cartography along with the wide-ranging computer, research and analytical skills. Recently University of Delhi has implemented “Undergraduate Curriculum Framework 2022” which is based on National Education Policy 2020. Accordingly, the department has adopted the NEP-oriented approach for its curriculum.
We understand the importance of technology in teaching Geography and we provide the students with all the necessary visual and audio aids. The Department maintains two Geography laboratories for teaching, one for teaching Cartographic exercises and the other one for teaching Remote Sensing & Geographic Information Systems. The department has a rich collection of books in the college library in both English & Hindi. We have all the teaching tools such as GPS, wall maps, topographic sheets, aerial photographs, satellite maps, weather maps and 3D models etc.
To enrich the learning experience the department constantly holds open discussion & interactive sessions along with conventional classroom teaching. Students are mentored through tutorial classes where they are given writing and map making exercises. Field work is an essential component of the curriculum. It provides a scope for critical and scientific understanding of all the aspects within the discipline. Faculty of the department actively organizes Workshops, Seminars, Webinars, Faculty Development Programmes throughout the academic session. The department collaborates with other academic and government organizations to organize such events. Department has very active Student’s association named DHARA.
