Department Name:
English
Basic Details:
The Department of English believes in student-centered pedagogy with a wide range of interests, specialisations and multidisciplinary approach to literature. The faculty is diverse with a wide range of interests and specializations. We have theatre practitioners, translators and researchers but what we most pride ourselves on is our ability to relate to our students and help them bring out the best in themselves. A wide range of activities outside the class supplements classroom teaching. We conduct academic activities such as students’ seminars, lecture series by distinguished academics and study sessions where faculty and students get together for brainstorming sessions on a wide range of topics. Students who undertake research-based projects are intensively supervised and encouraged to present papers at seminars organized by the department. We have a book club where books outside the canon are read and discussed. We also have a movie club that organises film screenings related to texts taught in class or any other that might interest students. We have an active poetry society, which conducts intra and inter college poetry competitions, and invites celebrated poets for interactions with students. The poetry society gathers routinely for poetry readings and discussions, and counts students from multiple departments among its members. The English section of the college magazine, Shyama, which is managed by us, and our departmental students‘ blog, Epignosis, provide space to budding writers and illustrators from our college to express themselves creatively. While the student co-ordinators of all these clubs are mostly from the Department of English, we encourage students of all disciplines to participate in our literary events. We offer support to students across disciplines in English language skills by periodically organizing English Language Support Centre workshops. Our students, after graduation, enter and add value to a variety of fields. Many go on to do their MPhils and PhDs from universities across the world, and join us as colleagues in academia. We also count lawyers, school teachers, corporate executives, entrepreneurs among our alumnae. What they all have in common is their unique critical approach of engaging with the world, free thinking and confident expression, and fond memories of their alma mater. The Department of English is committed to contribute to good practices in education.
