SPM College for women promotes gender sensitization through its curricular and extracurricular programmes, and attempts to encourage students, staff, their families and the local community (through outreach programmes) to critically examine their beliefs and assumptions about gender. This supports the larger institutional goal of shaping students into empowered young women, who will contribute towards the creation of a more equitable, just society by challenging beliefs and practices based on gender-based stereotypes.
In class, students are taught to read and analyse cultural representations of women and femininity; understand the process of gendering and how it shapes their own perceptions, experiences, feelings and aspirations; and to recognize and unpack the intersection of gender with race, class, and caste. Classroom discussions provide a great platform to the students to voice their opinion freely and without any inhibition.
Co-curricular and extra-curricular activities – such as webinars, lectures, workshops, intra-and-inter-college competitions – designed to promote gender sensitization are conducted by college departments, and by societies such as the NCC and the FCC.
Given that March 2020 onwards covid-appropriate protocols have had to be observed in all HEIs, it has been decided that all gender sensitization events and programmes for the academic year 2020-2021 will be conducted online. Particular emphasis will be placed on conducting activities which highlight and explore the unique challenges experienced by female students during the pandemic.
